Yesterday, without much fanfare or even a buzzy pop-up shop, one-of-one style icon Justin Bieber became the most recent mega-celebrity turned fashion designer. After months of teasing the goods on his Instagram, the hotel-slipper-loving pop singer officially dropped the debut collection from Drew House, his retro-influenced and very youthful clothing label. (The name is a nod to Bieber’s middle name.) The clothes themselves are simple and easy to wear, much like the relaxed yet mesmerizing everyday style we’ve come to know (and occasionally love) from the Biebz himself.
(Not to mention his iced-out smiley-face chain.) The king of baggy tees and gym shorts has kept a relatively low profile about his latest endeavor—he hasn’t officially announced anything, though he did file for the brand’s trademarks last year. Shop Here But he’s been wearing the hell out of it, and the fun, slouchy clothing is unmistakably right up Bieber’s alley. The brand’s slogan is “Wear like you don’t care,” which is an extremely accurate tagline for the sleazy style that the Biebz has made famous over the past year.
The second half of the collection is a number of graphic T-shirts and hoodies, each featuring either the brand’s name or smiley-face logo. If the first half of the collection skews plain and utilitarian, the graphic offerings are the kind of apparel that would look right at home in your local Zumiez. Either way, the goods speak to the type of clothing that Bieber loves to wear.
Everything costs between $48 and $148, prices that aren’t too far off from other contemporary mall-friendly streetwear brands. The label itself feels more inspired by the likes of Tyler, the Creator’s Golf Wang than Kanye West’s Yeezy: more accessible price points, youthful-feeling designs, and a general air of D.G.A.F.-ness. Bieber doesn’t seem too concerned with the approval of the fashion world, either. (He didn’t wait to launch the goods during New York Fashion Week, for example, which is only days away.) Time will tell if Drew House has the crossover hype beast appeal that his march did, but one of the perks of being a global pop star is that anything you put your name behind will practically sell itself.
